Gamer of Old
I come from a family that loves video games. When the family gets together, we play a variety of video games from Mario cart to Call of Duty Zombies. At our last Christmas party, my mom beat my nieces in Mario cart while some of us taught my brother's fiancĂ©e how to play super smash brothers. We do not just play video games in silence; we yell out in excitement, joke around, and laugh our heads off. More than anything, video games have given us time to talk about our lives. While some people may bag on video games, they are the reason why my siblings are my best friends.

Climber of Mountains
I like to rock climb, but I pretty much only go outdoors. Why pay for a membership when you can do it for free outdoors? Okay, obviously you have to buy the gear, but once you have it, it’s so much more fun to be out in nature! Some people have told me that you can't rock climb during the winter, but I am from St. George, Utah which means that I am used to climbing year-round. Also, winter is the time that there are no people at the climbing spots. I have totally climbed when snow was still on the ground. It just depends on how much you really want to climb!

Nerd of Chemistry
I am a biochemistry major and finished my medical school applications this summer! My favorite class is a toss-up between organic chemistry and biochemistry. I have some glassware for running experiments but basically only use them to help my nieces in science fair projects. Currently I am in a biochemistry research lab working on characterizing the post-translational modification machinery of an enzyme used in the biosynthesis of an antimicrobial.

Lover of Languages
Before choosing biochemistry as a major, I thought about going into linguistics and learning lots of languages. One of my dreams is to learn Latin and Greek! My favorite parts of history are about the Greeks and the Romans. More than anything I have always been curious about what it would be like to read the classical works in the language they were first written in. I have a similar interest with reading the Bible in Hebrew.

  1. I really enjoyed your epithets! I too come from a family who grew up playing video games. Everytime i go home we bring out all of the old games that we used to play. Good for you for being a biochemistry major. I started off with that major but then i switched to exercise science. I have taken organic chemistry but i definitely wouldnt say that it is one of my favorite classes... Your research project sounds super cool and it sounds like you are a very hardworking and successful person. Goodluck with medical school!

  2. Joe,
I actually enjoyed reading your epithets, you were very creative and your descriptions were pretty sweet too. I also love languages and being out in the mountains. Goodluck with school!

  3. I loved reading your epithets, but I found that we have very little in common. I have not grown up playing video games, climbing mountains, or taking interest in Chemistry; however, I do have a love for languages, just different types. In high school, I took Hawaiian classes and have always wanted to learn other Polynesian languages like Tahitian and even Maori! Still yet, I loved learning about your passions and especially the story of your mom! Sounds like a fun time!

  4. I can't believe organic chemistry is one of your favorite classes- that course was rough! Video games are great. My fiancee and I love to play smash bros together as well.

  6. I am a huge fan of the classic video games!! That is the main source of bonding that me and my friends had growing up. We would set up some One in the Chamber and just talk about life and get to know each other. The classic neighborhood activity was Super Smash Bros Melee! I miss the good old days of community gaming!
